Axochord vs. Notochord

Project Description: Press release figure for the EMBL's magazine upon publication of their paper detailing the evolutionary significance of the axochord in annelid worms. The location in the developing embryo and its genetic signature strongly suggest that rather than the notochord arising in chordates de novo, it is likely that changes to the architecture of the axochord led to the emergence of the notochord. The paper by Lauri et. al is titled "Development of the annelid axochord: Insights into notochord evolution" and is published in the September 12, 2014 edition of Science. doi: 10.1126/science.1253396
